Doing a backup of all your data is always a good idea. Marvin also keeps copies of your data on your device, and on our sync servers when sync is on. But a backup file that you save yourself is the safest way to keep your data.
Create Backup or Backup Now?
Create Backup saves a file to your computer. It never uses the cloud, so it works even when automatic backups fail. Use it before a factory reset or any big change.
Backup Now makes the same kind of backup as the automatic ones, right away. In a browser it saves to the cloud, which can fail if your browser, an extension, a work network or security software blocks the upload. In the desktop app it saves a file to your backup folder.
How to create a backup
Go to ☰ > Account > Backups:
Under Create Backup, click the Create Backup button:
All categories are already selected, and "Include completed tasks and projects" is on. To back up only some categories, first deselect all of them, then select the ones you want.
Everything under "Also back up" is selected by default, such as Day Items, Time Blocks, settings, Saved Tasks/Projects, Notebooks, Notebook Pages, Smart Lists, Rewards, Trackers and more. "Compress" is on too. The options are at the bottom of the window:
When everything is selected click the "Backup" button at the bottom to download all your data.
Make sure it is downloaded
You might have to give permission to your browser to download the file.
How to restore?
Exporting your data as a JSON file
If you'd like to save the backup file as JSON, just uncheck the "Compress backup" setting.
