If you use Marvin in a web browser, you may see a message saying "Backing up..." followed by "Backup failed: Failed to upload the backup". In Marvin 1.71.0 and 1.71.1 this could repeat every minute and make Marvin freeze for a few seconds each time.
Is my data safe?
Yes. The message only means the automatic copy to the cloud didn't get through. Your tasks, projects and settings are not affected, and you can still save a backup to your computer at any time (see below).
Why it happens
Since Marvin 1.71.0, automatic cloud backups are on by default when you use Marvin in a browser. On some computers, something between your browser and our backup storage blocks the upload. Common causes are:
a browser extension, such as an ad blocker or a privacy or security extension
a company network, VPN or firewall
security software that checks your web traffic
Quick fix: turn off automatic backups on this device
Click ☰ and go to Account > Backups.
Under Automatic Backups, switch off Enable on this device.
The message and the freezing stop right away. Automatic backups on your other devices keep running.
Or find out what's blocking it
Open Marvin in a different browser, or in a private window with extensions turned off. If backups work there, an extension is the likely cause. Allow app.amazingmarvin.com in that extension.
On a work computer or work network, try from home or another network.
Use the desktop app. It saves backups as files on your computer instead of the cloud, so it isn't affected.
Save a backup to your computer
Even with automatic backups off, you can save a full backup at any time:
Click ☰ and go to Account > Backups.
Under Create Backup, click Create Backup.
Check that the file is saved on your computer.
This backup doesn't use the cloud, so it works even when automatic backups fail. Use this one before a factory reset. Note that the Backup Now button saves to the cloud, so it can fail in the same way.
What changed in Marvin 1.71.2
If an automatic backup fails, Marvin now waits before trying again (1 hour at first, up to once a day) instead of trying every minute, so it no longer freezes. You can see the last error and the next try in Account > Backups.
