Showing completed tasks: inline, in a section, or hidden

Completed tasks can be displayed in multiple ways depending on your preferences and workflow. This article covers all the options available across different views and how to control them.

Where completed tasks appear

In your main list view, completed tasks can appear in two ways:

Inline: Completed tasks stay in their original position in your list and appear crossed out. This keeps your task hierarchy intact—a completed subtask stays under its parent, and a completed task inside a project stays inside that project.

In a section: Completed tasks are moved to a collapsible "Completed" section at the bottom of your list. This declutters your active task view while keeping completed items nearby.

Inline display and hierarchical placement

When you choose inline display, completed items respect the project hierarchy. A completed task that is two projects deep won't jump out of its projects to the top of the list—it stays in its original location, just crossed out. Only top-level completed items and those whose parents aren't visible appear at the top level of the list.

This prevents completed tasks from reorganizing your list structure and keeps related items grouped together.

Using Alt+click for temporary toggling

You can temporarily show or hide completed items without changing your saved preference by holding Alt (or Option on Mac) and clicking the arrow next to any task or project.

This one-time toggle applies just to that moment. When you refresh the page or navigate away, your saved preference takes effect again.

Global settings for completed tasks

Two global settings control how completed tasks are handled everywhere:

Strike through completed items: When on (the default), completed tasks display with a line through the text. Turn this off if you prefer a different visual indicator or want completed tasks to look like active ones while maintaining separate display options for each list.

Show completed items inside projects: When on, expanded projects display their completed tasks inline within the project. When off, completed tasks from inside projects are hidden from the project's list. You can still access all completed tasks in the main "Completed" section if you have that enabled globally or per-list.

Settings for your day and week views

In your daily and week views, you have additional control over completed tasks:

  • Show the Completed section: Use the hover menu on the right side of your screen to toggle whether a "Completed" section appears in your day or week view. This section shows all completed items for that day or week.

  • Inline or section placement: You can choose whether completed items appear inline (in their original positions, crossed out) or in a section, separate from your active tasks.

  • Smart list content: When using smart lists (recently completed items or all items completed today), you can customize whether they show completed tasks and from which time period.

On subtasks

Subtasks follow the same display rules as regular tasks. You can temporarily show or hide completed subtasks by holding Alt (or Option on Mac) and clicking the arrow next to the parent task. This is a one-time toggle—when you refresh or navigate away, the completed subtask visibility returns to your default setting.

You can also bulk-toggle the subtasks of multiple tasks at once by holding Shift while clicking an arrow in the day view.

Mobile

On iOS and Android, completed task display is controlled through the Features screen under "Completed tasks". The options are the same as on web: show or hide completed items, and choose inline or section display. Alt+click functionality is performed with a long press on the arrow.

Archive

All your completed tasks, regardless of how they're displayed, are permanently stored in your Archive view. Use the main menu (☰) to access it. The Archive is searchable and lets you review the full history of what you've accomplished.

FAQ

Can I have different display settings for each list? Yes. Each list (category) has its own inline/section preference. Set this by opening the list's options menu and choosing how to display completed items. Global settings still apply, so "Strike through completed items" affects all lists.

What happens to completed items inside projects when I turn off "Show completed items inside projects"? They're hidden from the project view but still appear in the main Completed section if you have that enabled. Toggling this setting doesn't delete anything—it just changes visibility.

Why do some completed tasks stay in place while others move to the top? Completed tasks that have a listed (visible) parent project stay inside that project. Only top-level completed tasks and those whose parents aren't in the current view move to the top level or the Completed section.

Does Alt+clicking save my preference? No. Alt+click is a temporary toggle for that moment only. Refresh the page or navigate away, and your saved preference takes effect again.

Can I hide completed tasks completely? Yes. Turn off "Show completed items inside projects" globally, and set each list to not show completed items. They'll still be in your Archive.

Are completed subtasks handled differently from regular completed tasks? No. They follow the same display logic. They can appear inline (under their parent) or in a section, and you can temporarily toggle them with Alt+click.

What's the difference between the two display modes for smart lists? One shows recently completed items from your selected list; the other shows all items completed today. Both respect your inline/section setting.

Can I see completed items from multiple days at once? Yes, in the Archive view. Your day view shows only completed items from that specific day, but the Archive collects everything across all dates and is searchable.

How do I access recently completed items? If you've enabled the "Show recently completed items" smart list, they appear as a smart list in your sidebar. They also show in the Completed section of your daily view if that's enabled.

What happens to completed recurring tasks? Completed instances of recurring tasks are stored in the Archive. The recurring task itself remains active and will generate new instances according to its schedule.
