Recurring Task Magic Words

If you have a quarterly recurring project and want the title to be "Q2 2024 Review", or a twice-weekly recurring task and want the title to be "Monday stretching" on Monday and "Friday stretching" on Friday, then you can use magic words in your recurring task title.

Open the recurring task settings: click the recurring icon next to a recurring task's title, or open the main menu, click Recurring, and add or edit a recurring task there. Put a magic word, like $MONTH, in the title. When you save, the magic word is replaced with the matching value for each copy.

If an instance is scheduled on 2024-05-31, then:

Previous dates

Each magic word also has a PREV_ version that gives the day, week, month, quarter or year before. For a copy scheduled on 2024-05-31:

  • $PREV_DATE: 2024-05-30 (in your date format)

  • $PREV_DAY: Thursday ($PREV_DAY3: Thu, $PREV_DAY2: Th)

  • $PREV_WEEK: the week number of the week before

  • $PREV_MONTH: April ($PREV_MON: Apr)

  • $PREV_QUARTER: Q1

  • $PREV_YEAR: 2023

This is handy for things like "Send $PREV_MONTH invoice", which becomes "Send April invoice".
