Showing completed tasks: inline, in a section, or hidden
Completed tasks can be displayed in multiple ways depending on your preferences and workflow. This article covers all the options available across different views and how to control them.
Where completed tasks appear
In your main list view, completed tasks can appear in two ways:
Inline: Completed tasks stay in their original position in your list and appear crossed out. This keeps your task hierarchy intact—a completed subtask stays under its parent, and a completed task inside a project stays inside that project.
In a section: Completed tasks are moved to a collapsible "Completed" section at the bottom of your list. This declutters your active task view while keeping completed items nearby.
Inline display and hierarchical placement
When you choose inline display, completed items respect the project hierarchy. A completed task that is two projects deep won't jump out of its projects to the top of the list—it stays in its original location, just crossed out. Only top-level completed items and those whose parents aren't visible appear at the top level of the list.
This prevents completed tasks from reorganizing your list structure and keeps related items grouped together.
Using Alt+click for temporary toggling
You can temporarily show or hide completed items without changing your saved preference by holding Alt (or Option on Mac) and clicking the arrow next to any task or project.
This one-time toggle applies just to that moment. When you refresh the page or navigate away, your saved preference takes effect again.
Global settings for completed tasks
Two global settings control how completed tasks are handled everywhere:
Strike through completed items: When on (the default), completed tasks display with a line through the text. Turn this off if you prefer a different visual indicator or want completed tasks to look like active ones while maintaining separate display options for each list.
Show completed items inside projects: When on, expanded projects display their completed tasks inline within the project. When off, completed tasks from inside projects are hidden from the project's list. You can still access all completed tasks in the main "Completed" section if you have that enabled globally or per-list.
Settings for your day and week views
In your daily and week views, you have additional control over completed tasks:
Show the Completed section: Use the hover menu on the right side of your screen to toggle whether a "Completed" section appears in your day or week view. This section shows all completed items for that day or week.
Inline or section placement: You can choose whether completed items appear inline (in their original positions, crossed out) or in a section, separate from your active tasks.
Smart list content: When using smart lists (recently completed items or all items completed today), you can customize whether they show completed tasks and from which time period.
On subtasks
Subtasks follow the same display rules as regular tasks. You can temporarily show or hide completed subtasks by holding Alt (or Option on Mac) and clicking the arrow next to the parent task. This is a one-time toggle—when you refresh or navigate away, the completed subtask visibility returns to your default setting.
You can also bulk-toggle the subtasks of multiple tasks at once by holding Shift while clicking an arrow in the day view.
Mobile
On iOS and Android, completed task display is controlled through the Features screen under "Completed tasks". The options are the same as on web: show or hide completed items, and choose inline or section display. Alt+click functionality is performed with a long press on the arrow.
Archive
All your completed tasks, regardless of how they're displayed, are permanently stored in your Archive view. Use the main menu (☰) to access it. The Archive is searchable and lets you review the full history of what you've accomplished.
FAQ
Where did my task go when I checked it off?
If you're not seeing a completed task, it's likely in a hidden section or outside your current view. Check your list's settings—if the "Show completed items in a section" option is on, completed tasks move to a collapsible "Completed" section at the bottom. See Where completed tasks appear and Settings for your day and week views for options to show or hide them. If it's still missing, check your Archive view (main menu ☰).
How do I keep completed tasks in the list, crossed out?
Turn on the "Strike through completed items" global setting (Settings > Completed tasks), then for each list, choose "Inline" in that list's options. See Global settings for completed tasks and Where completed tasks appear for details on these settings.
My completed task jumped out of its project / to the bottom of the list. Why?
This happens when your list is set to show completed tasks in a section instead of inline. Check your list's completed task settings and switch to "Inline" display. See Inline display and hierarchical placement to understand why inline keeps tasks in their original positions.
How do I keep completed tasks in their original order?
Use inline display mode instead of section mode. With inline, completed tasks stay exactly where they were—crossed out but in place. See Where completed tasks appear and Inline display and hierarchical placement for how this works.
How do I hide completed tasks in just one project?
Open the project's menu (three dots) and toggle off "Show completed items inside projects" for that project. If you want temporary control without saving a preference, hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click the project's arrow. See Using Alt+click for temporary toggling.
Why aren't my completed tasks crossed out?
Turn on the "Strike through completed items" global setting in your Completed tasks settings. See Global settings for completed tasks for where to find it.
How do I show completed tasks in the Master List?
Open the Master List's menu and choose how to display completed items—either inline or in a section. You can also use Alt+click (Option+click on Mac) on the list's arrow for a temporary toggle. See Settings for your day and week views.
How do I hide completed subtasks / show them again?
Hold Alt (Option on Mac) and click the arrow next to the parent task to toggle completed subtasks on or off temporarily. To change the default setting, go to your global or per-list completed task settings. See On subtasks and Using Alt+click for temporary toggling.
My completed section disappeared from my day. How do I get it back?
Use the hover menu on the right side of your day view (the icon with three lines) to toggle the "Show completed items" section back on. See Settings for your day and week views for other completed task display options.
Can I do this on mobile?
Yes. Go to the Features screen (☰ menu > Features) and find "Completed tasks" to control visibility and choose inline or section display. Long press the arrow next to a task for Alt+click behavior. See Mobile for details.
